The swirly space of the iPhone MMS App
On Dec 5th, 2007 we released an early version of our native MMS application for the iPhone.
The major feature is that you now can send MMSs with your iPhone. Hopefully the recipent has a phone that is capable to receive those MMSs…
Limitations
In this first and early release you can only send MMSs and not receive any. Also, you can only send images, i.e. movies are not supported as for now.
We aim to address those limitations in future releases.
Installation
We will make this application available from a trusted source in the near future. In the meantime you can download the MMS App v0.1 from here.
Unzip the package, copy the files to /Applications/MMS.app on your iPhone.
Make the application executable by issuing the command:
chmod +x /Applications/MMS.app/mms
Restart SpringBoard to have the MMS icon show up and you are ready to go!
Usage
Configure MMS server settings
The first thing to do is to configure your MMS server settings. Make sure you have the correct settings. If in doubt, contact your service provider.
In the MMS’s Settings panel, enter the MMSC server setting in the MMSC field. If an optional port is required you append it after the MMSC server name separated by a colon ‘:’. For example,
MMSC: mmsc.svcprov.com:9231 or MMSC: 210.120.212.121:1221 or maybe just MMSC: mms
Sometimes an additional proxy server is used, which you then must configure. However, this is not always needed. You configure the Proxy server in the same way as the MMSC server described above.
Limitations
We have had reports that some service providers requires you to enter additional MMS-specific settings like username, password and apn. Unfortunately, those settings are not available in this release but we will address this problem.
Create and send an MMS
Just write down a text message or a title that gets sent with the image.
Select a recipent from your Address book.
Select an image from your Camera roll.
Finally, hit the send button to send the MMS. If the delivery was successful an entry will be added to the sent MMS history list.
That’s about it!
Note
The photos from your camera roll gets resized when they are sent. In this release it is not possible configure the size of the resized image but this will be addressed in future releases. Notice however that most service providers have a limitation for how large the image can be. 300KB seems to be a common size.
We have tested the application on 1.0.2 and 1.1.1, and we have received success stories from people using 1.1.2 as well.
The future
Obviously, we have some stuff left to do before a full 1.0 release. Here are a few obvious ones:
* Allow for configuration of additional MMS-specific settings like: usr, pwd and apn.
* Enable the iPhone to receive MMSs.
* Maybe disable WiFi and enable GPRS when app starts up and the reverse when closing down.
* A button to clear sent MMSs.
* Add setting for changing the image conversion dimensions.
Note this list is not the offical nor the complete todo-list…
If you want to support our efforts in enhancing the MMS capabilities of the iPhone you are of course very welcome to make a donation.
